SHS donation project 2024

“What the world of tomorrow will look like depends to a large extent on the imagination of those who are learning to read right now.”

Astrid Lindgren

We are delighted to support the reading support programme of the Rottenburg association “Mentor” with our donation this year. The organisation has set itself the task of promoting the reading skills of schoolchildren. For those who cannot read well, significant challenges lie ahead in the world of tomorrow. Unfortunately, studies show that more and more children are finding it difficult to understand texts or develop a joy for reading.

The members of the association “Mentor – die Leselernhelfer*innen” are determined not to leave parents and schools to tackle this issue alone. Since 2020, they have been supporting children at Rottenburg schools through a one-to-one approach: once a week, for an entire school year, one adult works with a specific child to inspire their enthusiasm for stories, books, and creative games. Their motto is “Education through bonding.” A relaxed, harmonious learning environment, free from time pressures or performance demands, is considered essential. Children with limited German language skills are also taught the language through playful activities alongside the reading support.

Volunteer mentors need to bring enthusiasm for reading, a sense of humour, patience, and time.  Everything else is taught in a practical training session right at the start of the school year. Further professional development and training programmes will follow throughout the year.  To ensure a wide range of resources and support, the Rottenburg association is a member of the Federal Mentor Association and works together with other reading mentor associations.
